Sewer billing note

Sewer bills often follow water use, but the utility may cap billed sewer volume or exclude outdoor use.

If your bill lists units in gallons instead of CCF, divide gallons by 748 to estimate CCF. If it lists sewer as a flat monthly charge, set the sewer rate to 0 and enter the charge as the base fee.

FAQ

Short answers for search visitors and bill-checking moments.

How is a sewer bill calculated?

Many sewer bills multiply billed sewer volume by a sewer rate, then add a fixed sewer service charge. Billed sewer volume may equal water use, a percentage of water use, or a capped winter average.

Why is my sewer bill higher than my water bill?

Sewer rates can be higher than water rates, and fixed sewer charges can be large. Some bills also include wastewater treatment, infrastructure, or minimum charges.

What is a winter average cap on a sewer bill?

A winter average cap limits billed sewer volume based on lower winter water use. It is often used so outdoor summer water use does not fully increase sewer charges.
